How Search Works

In the video below, Matt Cutts, a senior Google Engineer, explains how Google Search Works.

The video also gives an overview of how Google search works. A google search is basically a query of Googles index of the web. The index is created by software programs called spiders (googlebot) fetch a few pages and follow links to other pages and follow links to other pages and so on spidering/indexing all available websites.

When a search is submitted, software checks in the Google index for every page that includes the search terms and then filters the pages using more than 200 factors like:

  • how many times the search terms are included on a page
  • do the search terms appear in the url
  • do they appear in the title (metatag title)
  • do they appear in the page title (H1)
  • are they directly ajacent to other words
  • does the page contain synonyms to the search terms
  • is the page from a quality website
  • what is the pages “Pagerank” (calculated by how many outside websites link to the page and how important are those links).

Each page is given a score and that score is used to rank the results listed on the search page.

Therefore to improve your website ranking for a specific search term you need to improve the score for that particular search term.
